We’re always keen to do our bit for charities in our local community. So we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take part in an inter-company dragon boat race to raise money for LIVES.
If you’re not already aware of their great work, LIVES is a first-responder organisation, staffed by skilled medical volunteers. They support 999 staff with ambulances and medical equipment – all funded solely by public donations.
It had been two years since the last Dragon Boat Festival, due to Covid restrictions, so there was a real buzz of excitement in the air amongst the old hands, despite the drizzly conditions. As first timers at the competition, and event sponsors too, we were feeling the pressure! There were 13 members of the Datcom team, including one person who can’t swim, so you may feel that luck was not on our side. But we did ok for beginners, coming in 15th out of 20. Yes, there’s some room for improvement and something to aim for next year. Most importantly, the team really put themselves out of their comfort zone and got stuck in.
So far, the Dragon Boat Festival has raised over £15,000. Here at Datcom, we’re still collecting our donations and totting up totals, but we’re looking forward to announcing a healthy number soon. If you’d like to support our fearless Dragon Boaters and donate to LIVES, you can do so here.

“We’re soaking wet, everything hurts, but we’ve raised a lot of money for an amazing charity – and we’ve had a brilliant time too. I couldn’t be prouder of our team”
Gary Williams, Datcom.
Congratulations to Belton Construction who were crowned champions for the third year running, as well as runners-up Brewin Dolphin and third placed Brown & Co. Thanks to Ringrose Law for organising such a great event. See you next year!
